Hiro TERADA

Hiro TERADA Hiro Terada was born in Makimachi, Nigata on August 4, 1931. He originally began working for a Japanese telecommunications company, but he couldn’t give up on his dream of being a cartoonist. So he moved to Tokyo in 1953 and later that year published his first work on "Manga Shonen". He was living in Tokiwa-so, which was a famous apartment building for manga artists located in Shinamachi in Tokyo. Until June 1957, this place used to house many other popular cartoonists who would mingle with young cartoonists. They then formed a cartoonists group named Shin Manga To with Fujiko Fujio and others. They played a part in the development of Japanese comics. His important works are "Sebango 0", "Supotsuman Sasuke", "Supotsuman Kintaro", "Moretsu Sensei", "Kurayami Godan" and more. He passed away in 1992.

    The Sanctuary of Manga festival

    Date: Aug. 7, 2010

The sanctuary of Manga festival was held on August 7th for the second straight year on Tokiwa-so Street which is where Tokiwa-so used to be located. I visited during the daytime this year.

It was the same as last year; there was a stall to sell Chuda, an old alcoholic drink with shochu and soda mixed together. (100 yen per a drink) "Sebango 0 (Gakunenshi ver.)" which was just published in August and Manga Shop’s catalogs were exhibited.

There was a new booth this year "Tokiwa-so small museum" which had many people come through. There were also messages about Tokiwa-so by cartoonists who are currently active in the Japanese comic world. There was also a china bowl and menu for Matsuba, which is a long-established Chinese restaurant which used to be near Tokiwa-so in the booth.

At Minami Nagasaki Hanasaki Park where there is a monument of Tokiwa-so, I found an information bulletin "Tokiwa-so Dori" that was made by the people of a shopping street. It contains a map of Tokiwa-so Street, a chronological record of Tokiwa-so and so on. It was put with Manga Shop’s catalogs.

I ate Tokiwa-so ramen rice at Matsuba to finish up my day. Mmmmm… Yummy!!

Here is the report of the Sanctuary of Manga festival in 2009.
